Unidad Editorial Información General, SLU —the publishing company of El Mundo and other titles in the group— now has its new labor framework in force. The agreement, signed on July 29, 2026 and published in the BOE on October 29, 2026, regulates minimum working conditions for all staff in Spain, with retroactive effect from January 1, 2026.
For HR managers and executives of the group, this agreement is the reference text for any decision on working conditions until at least mid-2028. Ignoring it —or applying conditions below what was agreed— exposes the company to collective disputes and claims.
What does this regulation establish?
The agreement sets the framework for labor relations at Unidad Editorial with four fundamental pillars:
| Element | Detail |
|---|---|
| Temporal scope | From January 1, 2026 to June 30, 2028. Automatic annual renewal if neither party denounces it before expiration. |
| Personal scope | All workers of the company in national centers, except express exclusions. |
| Exclusions | Executives of group 0, external collaborators, commercial agents and contract staff. |
| Parity Commission | 6 members. Functions: interpret, monitor and apply the agreement, and mediate in collective disputes. |
| Conflict resolution | Accession to SIMA (Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service) as a mandatory extrajudicial mechanism prior to any judicial action. |
| Minimum conditions | The agreed conditions are minimum. Pre-existing more beneficial individual conditions are respected. |
The principle of most beneficial condition is key: if a worker had recognized conditions superior to those of the agreement before its entry into force, those conditions are maintained. The agreement cannot be used to reduce rights already individually acquired.
Economic and operational impact
The agreement does not publish specific salary tables in the registered summary, but its operational impact for the company is immediate on several fronts:
- Legal certainty until June 2028: The company has a stable framework to plan labor costs without risk of conventional vacuum during that period.
- Automatic renewal: If neither party denounces the agreement before June 30, 2028, it is renewed for another year. HR must schedule the deadline for denunciation if the company wants to renegotiate.
- Active Parity Commission: The creation of a 6-member body with mediation capacity reduces the risk of internal conflicts escalating to judicial proceedings without passing through an internal resolution body.
- SIMA as mandatory filter: Before filing any collective lawsuit, the parties must go to SIMA. This adds a mediation phase that can avoid costly litigation, but also means the company must be prepared to participate in these processes.
- Respect for individual conditions: HR must review which workers have conditions superior to the agreement to ensure that no inadvertent reductions are applied when updating contracts or supplements.
Who does it affect?
The agreement applies directly to:
- All workers of Unidad Editorial Información General, SLU with workplace in Spain.
- Editors, technical staff, administrative personnel and any category not expressly excluded.
- Representatives of workers in the Parity Commission (3 members from the social side).
- Representatives of the company in the Parity Commission (3 members from the business side).
Are expressly excluded:
- Executives classified in group 0.
- External collaborators.
- Commercial agents.
- Contract staff.
If your company is a service provider or contracts staff for Unidad Editorial, this agreement does not directly bind you, although it may influence the conditions that the main company requires in procurement specifications.
Practical example
Imagine that an editor at El Mundo has a personal salary supplement recognized through individual negotiation in 2022, superior to what the agreement establishes for their category. When the new collective text comes into force, the HR department cannot eliminate that supplement arguing that "it is already covered by the agreement". The principle of most beneficial condition requires maintaining it.
Now imagine that a collective dispute arises over the interpretation of an article of the agreement —for example, on the calculation of hours in coverage of special events. Before union representatives can file a lawsuit before the labor court, both parties must go to SIMA. The 6-member Parity Commission can also be activated to mediate. Only if these channels fail does the judicial door open.
This double filter —Parity Commission + SIMA— is a lever that company management can use to resolve disputes with lower cost and less public exposure than a labor lawsuit.
What should companies do now?
- Verify retroactive application: The agreement has effect from January 1, 2026. HR must check if any condition applied between January and the publication date (October 2026) needs to be regularized.
- Identify excluded workers: Review which employees are classified as group 0 executives, external collaborators, commercial agents or contract staff to avoid applying the agreement to them by mistake or excluding them improperly.
- Audit more beneficial individual conditions: Map which workers have supplements or conditions superior to the agreement to ensure they are not reduced in any contract update.
- Establish and operationalize the Parity Commission: Designate the 6 members (3 from each side) and establish the protocol for convening and operation so the body can act with agility in any interpretive dispute.
- Register accession to SIMA: Confirm that the internal procedure for managing collective disputes includes referral to SIMA as a mandatory prior step before any judicial action.
- Schedule the denunciation date: If the company plans to renegotiate the agreement before it is automatically renewed, it must activate the denunciation process before June 30, 2028.
