Regulation (EU) 2017/1151 is the base standard that regulates type-approval procedures regarding emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the European Union. The 2026 amendment does not replace that framework, but adjusts it at the specific points indicated, with immediate effect from 23 July 2026.

The completion dates are the most critical element: they determine until when vehicles can be manufactured and registered under the Euro 6 category. Any mismatch between a manufacturer's internal deadlines and the new regulatory deadlines can result in the inability to register units already produced or in the process of production.

Economic and operational impact

The impact of this regulation is not abstract. It materializes in three concrete operational areas:

• Certification and homologation: Manufacturers must review their active type-approval homologation files to verify that the internal deadlines of their Euro 6 models align with the new completion dates. Practical example

A van manufacturer with a Euro 6 model whose production was planned until the end of 2026 based on the previous deadlines of Regulation (EU) 2017/1151 must verify, immediately, whether the new completion dates introduced by Regulation (EU) 2026/1791 advance or modify that limit.

If the new completion dates are earlier than their current production schedule, units manufactured after that date will not be able to register in the EU. This implies reviewing the production plan, negotiating with the homologation authority and, if necessary, accelerating pending registrations before the new deadline. The cost of not acting in time can be the immobilization of hundreds of units with no legal outlet to the European market.
