Biomethane producers in the Region of Murcia have had a new injection point available on the natural gas transport network since May 6, 2026. The Resolution from the General Directorate of Energy Policy and Mines (reference BOE-A-2026-11298) authorizes Enagás Transporte, SAU, to modify position 15.31.2 of the Cartagena-Lorca pipeline by incorporating a G-65 measurement station specifically designed for biomethane injection.

This is not a minor infrastructure project. The enablement of biomethane injection points on the transport network is one of the bottlenecks that has hindered the development of the sector in Spain. This resolution removes that obstacle for the Fuente Álamo area.

What does this regulation establish?

The resolution grants two simultaneous authorizations to Enagás Transporte, SAU:

  • Administrative authorization: official permission to execute the modification of the existing gas infrastructure.
  • Approval of the execution project: technical validation of the project called "Annex to the Cartagena-Lorca pipeline. Modification of position 15.31.2 with G-65 measurement station for biomethane injection".

The modification affects position 15.31.2 of the Cartagena-Lorca pipeline, which is one of the transport pipelines in the network managed by Enagás in the southeastern peninsula. The new G-65 measurement station allows monitoring and recording the flow of biomethane injected into the network, complying with the technical and safety requirements required for the integration of renewable gases into transport infrastructure.

Economic and operational impact

The enablement of this injection point has direct consequences for the biomethane value chain in Murcia:

  • For biomethane producers: they have official and technically enabled access to the transport network. Without this type of infrastructure, locally produced biomethane cannot enter the natural gas network and its commercialization is limited to direct or local uses of lower value.
  • For Enagás Transporte: it expands its network of renewable gas injection points, in line with the decarbonization objectives of the Spanish gas system and European mandates on renewable gas integration.
  • For the regional energy sector: the existence of connection infrastructure is a determining factor for investment in new biomethane production plants. An operational injection point in Fuente Álamo can act as a catalyst for new projects in the area.

The European regulatory context, oriented toward decarbonization of the gas sector, makes this type of authorization increasingly strategic. The availability of injection points is one of the factors that biomethane investors analyze before committing capital to new production facilities.

Who does it affect?

  • Enagás Transporte, SAU: holder of the authorization and responsible for executing and operating the new G-65 station.
  • Biomethane producers in the Region of Murcia: especially those located in the Fuente Álamo area, who now have an accessible injection point on the transport network.
  • Biomethane plant developers: companies or investors evaluating biomethane production projects in the southeastern peninsula, for whom the existence of connection infrastructure is a prerequisite.
  • Organic waste and agroindustrial sector managers: in Murcia, agroindustrial activity generates significant volumes of biomass that can be transformed into biomethane. The availability of network connection improves the economic viability of these projects.
  • Renewable gas traders: companies operating in the biomethane guarantee of origin market that need active injection points to certify the renewable origin of the gas.

Practical example

A biomethane plant located in the municipality of Fuente Álamo, produced from agroindustrial waste in the area, needs to connect to the transport network to be able to sell its production to renewable natural gas traders.

Before this resolution, position 15.31.2 of the Cartagena-Lorca pipeline did not have the technical infrastructure necessary to receive biomethane injections. The plant developer would have to look for alternative injection points, possibly further away, which increases transportation costs and reduces project viability.

With the G-65 measurement station already authorized and installed by Enagás Transporte at that position, the developer can initiate the process of requesting network access at that specific point, shortening distances and connection costs. The injection point has been officially enabled since May 6, 2026.

What should companies do now?

  1. If you are a biomethane producer in Murcia: contact Enagás Transporte, SAU, to initiate the process of requesting access to the injection point enabled at position 15.31.2 of the Cartagena-Lorca pipeline in Fuente Álamo. The authorization has already been granted.
  2. If you are evaluating a biomethane plant project in the southeast: incorporate this injection point into your technical and economic viability analysis. The existence of operational connection infrastructure in Fuente Álamo improves the business case for projects in that geographic area.
  3. If you manage organic waste or biomass in the Region of Murcia: analyze whether biomethane production from that waste is viable, given that there is now an access point to the transport network in the area.
  4. If you are a renewable gas trader: update your map of available injection points in Spain. Fuente Álamo (position 15.31.2, Cartagena-Lorca pipeline) is a new active point since May 2026.
