Four Spanish public debt references go to auction on November 5, 2026. The General Directorate of the Treasury and Financial Policy convenes these issuances through the Resolution of October 30, 2026 (BOE-A-2026-22997), published on November 2. These are increases of existing references, which guarantees liquidity in the secondary market from the first day of trading.

Gross yields range between approximately 1.3% for inflation-indexed bonds and 4.4% for 15-year bonds, reflecting the current yield curve of the Spanish sovereign debt market.

3.10%
Coupon bond ~4.75 years (maturity 2031)
0.70%
Coupon inflation-indexed bond (maturity 2033)
3.40%
Coupon 10-year bond (maturity 2036)
3.50%
Coupon 15-year bond (maturity 2041)

What does this regulation establish?

The resolution convenes the auction of four different State Bond references. Each has its own characteristics in terms of term, coupon and nature of return:

ReferenceApproximate termNominal couponMaturityApprox. gross returnType
Medium-term bond~4.75 years3.10%2031~3.1%Fixed rate
Inflation-indexed bond~7 years0.70%2033~1.3%Indexed (CPI)
Long-term bond10 years3.40%2036~3.4%Fixed rate
Very long-term bond15 years3.50%2041~4.4%Fixed rate

All securities will be issued on November 10, 2026 and will be admitted for trading on AIAF Fixed Income Market. As these are increases of existing references, they are managed as a single issuance per reference, which facilitates price formation in the secondary market.

Market Makers have exclusive access to second rounds of each auction, at the marginal price resulting from the first round. This mechanism rewards entities that assume the commitment to provide continuous liquidity to the Spanish public debt market.

Economic and operational impact

From the perspective of the institutional investor or qualified saver, these auctions present a range of options that covers different portfolio needs:

  • Inflation hedging: The CPI-indexed bond with 0.70% coupon and maturity in 2033 offers real protection against inflation. Its nominal gross return (~1.3%) is lower than fixed-rate bonds, but capital and coupons are adjusted to the price index.
  • Short to medium-term returns: The ~4.75-year bond at 3.10% is the option with the shortest duration and therefore lower sensitivity to interest rate movements.
  • Maximize long-term returns: The 15-year bond at 3.50% offers the highest gross return (~4.4%), but with greater exposure to interest rate variation during the bond's life.
  • Access to second rounds: Only Market Makers can access second rounds at the marginal price, which represents a significant operational advantage for these entities.

The yield curve reflected in these four references shows a clear positive slope: the longer the term, the higher the required return, which is consistent with the current interest rate environment.

Who does it affect?

  • Institutional investors (investment funds, insurance companies, pension funds): can participate in the first round of the auction.
  • Market Makers: have exclusive access to second rounds at the marginal price resulting from the first round, allowing them to increase positions under known conditions.
  • Savers and qualified individual investors: can access the secondary market (AIAF) from November 10, 2026, once the securities are in circulation.
  • Corporate treasuries and asset managers seeking to diversify in Spanish sovereign debt with different duration and inflation risk profiles.
  • CFOs and financial directors of companies with treasury surpluses evaluating fixed income investment alternatives.

Practical example

A pension fund with the need to cover long-term liabilities decides to participate in the November 5, 2026 auction. It opts for the 15-year bond at 3.50% with maturity in 2041.

If the fund is awarded 10 million euros nominal in the first round, it will receive an annual coupon of 350,000 euros (3.50% on nominal) for 15 years, plus the return of principal in 2041. The effective gross return will be approximately 4.4% depending on the auction award price.

If the entity is also a Market Maker, it can participate in the second round at the resulting marginal price to increase its position without price uncertainty, allowing it to complete its investment objective with greater operational efficiency.

In the case of the inflation-indexed bond (0.70% coupon, maturity 2033): an investment of 10 million euros nominal generates a base coupon of 70,000 euros annually, but both the coupon and principal are adjusted to CPI, so the effective real return will depend on inflation developments until 2033.

What should investors do now?

  1. Verify access to the primary auction: Confirm whether the entity has Market Maker status or must participate through an authorized intermediary for the first round on November 5, 2026.
  2. Define the target reference: Analyze which segment of the curve (4.75, 10 or 15 years) or if the inflation-indexed bond best fits portfolio objectives and liability profile.
  3. Prepare the purchase order before November 5: Auctions have strict deadlines for submitting bids. Coordinate with the custodian or depositary bank with sufficient advance notice.
  4. Plan accounting: The securities will be issued on November 10, 2026, a relevant date for accounting registration of the investment.
  5. Evaluate the secondary market (AIAF): Investors who do not access the primary auction can acquire the securities on AIAF from November 10, once the market price is established.
  6. Review applicable taxation: Gross returns from these bonds are taxed as investment income. Consult with your tax advisor on the treatment of inflation-indexed bonds, which have particularities in capital adjustment allocation.

Frequently asked questions

When is the State Bond auction in November 2026?

The auction is scheduled for November 5, 2026. The awarded securities will be issued on November 10, 2026 and will be admitted for trading on AIAF Fixed Income Market from that same date.

What interest rates do State Bonds offer in November 2026?

The four auctioned references have the following nominal coupons: 3.10% for the ~4.75-year bond (maturity 2031), 0.70% for the inflation-indexed bond (maturity 2033), 3.40% for the 10-year bond (maturity 2036) and 3.50% for the 15-year bond (maturity 2041). Effective gross returns range between ~1.3% and ~4.4% depending on the reference.

What are second rounds and who can access them?

Second rounds are an additional phase of the auction accessible only to Market Makers. They are conducted at the marginal price resulting from the first round, which eliminates price uncertainty for these entities. It is an exclusive advantage that compensates for their commitment to provide continuous liquidity to the Spanish public debt market.

How does the Treasury inflation-indexed bond work?

The inflation-indexed bond with 0.70% coupon and maturity in 2033 adjusts both periodic coupons and principal to the consumer price index. This means the investor receives real protection against inflation: if CPI rises, the amount of coupons and capital returned at maturity increase proportionally. The nominal gross return is ~1.3%, lower than fixed-rate bonds, but real return is protected.

Can an individual buy these State Bonds?

Individuals cannot directly participate in the primary auction on November 5. However, from November 10, 2026, the securities will be available on the secondary market AIAF Fixed Income Market, where any investor can acquire them through their financial institution or broker. It is also possible to subscribe to public debt directly through the Public Treasury through its channels for retail investors.
