11 new official doctorates in Spain 2026: what it means for universities and employers

Registration in the RUCT grants the status of accredited qualification, but all programs must undergo periodic accreditation renewal in accordance with Royal Decree 822/2021.

Practical example

A company in the agribusiness sector has a clause in its collective agreement that recognizes a salary supplement for employees with an official doctorate degree in areas related to food production. Until now, it only accepted qualifications from programs already registered in the RUCT.

As of September 22, 2026, an employee who presents a qualification from the new Food Science doctorate program recognized in this resolution has the right to claim that supplement, since the qualification is registered in the RUCT and has full official validity. The HR department must update its qualification verification procedures to include the newly recognized programs and avoid conflicts or subsequent claims.

Similarly, a university that begins recruiting doctoral students for the 2026-2027 academic year in one of the recognized Psychology or Law programs can now advertise the program as an official qualification, which strengthens its positioning against programs without state recognition.

What should companies do now?

1. Update qualification recognition criteria in HR processes to include the 11 new doctorate programs registered in the RUCT from September 22, 2026.
2. Review collective agreements and salary scales that reference official doctoral qualifications: check whether any of the new programs (Nursing, Political Science, Law, Economics, Arts, Agriculture, Psychology, Food Science) activates supplements or access requirements.
3. Verify in the RUCT the registration of any doctoral qualification presented by candidates or employees, especially if it comes from Catholic universities or joint international programs, typologies included in this resolution.

5. For universities: begin now planning the periodic accreditation renewal process required by RD 822/2021, given that the status of "accredited qualification" granted by registration in the RUCT is initial and not permanent.
